Shotokan karate is one of the most widely practiced styles of karate in the world today. The style was founded by the Okinawan master Gichin Funakoshi, and was a combination of the techniques he was taught from the two masters he studied with. Funakoshi brought the style to Japan early last century and his senior Japanese students helped in developing it into the dynamic martial art it is today. The Japanese organised the Shotokan style and developed instructor-training programmes, which had the goal of sending Japanese teachers abroad to spread the word of karate.
The club is affiliated to the Japan Karate Shotorenmei, headed by Sensei Asai till his death in 2006, now headed by Sensei Kagawa.
